Chemical Engineering: Industry Growth and Employability 26th March



A scintillating seminar was held at Oakbrook Business School on 26th Mar’ 2014 on the topic “Industry growth and employability of Chemical Engineers”. The seminar had presence of a large number of students from various colleges as well as various semesters of Chemical Engineering. The students were eager to get addressed by prominent personalities of the field and get insightful anecdotes from them.

The seminar had presence of profound personalities of Chemical Engineering sector from academia as well as industry namely R.J. Shah (CEO, Dahej SEZ Ltd., Gandhinagar); Shri C.G. Bhagchandani (Prof. Chemical Engineering, LD Engineering College); Samir Patel(Managing Director at Amos Enterprise Ltd). The seminar was a highly interactive seminar where students and speakers shared their views and looked upon the opportunities in the field of Chemical Engineering.

Speaker 1: Mr. R. J. Shah (CEO, Dahej SEZ Ltd., Gandhinagar)

Mr. Shah has profound experience in the field of engineering. He has worked as Chief Industrial Advisor to Govt. of Gujarat with Industries Commissionerate, Gandhinagar and upgraded as Principal Chief Industrial Advisor from December 2001. He has also worked with Industrial Extension Bureau, Ahmedabad at various capacities. Apart from this, he has worked in companies like Stormac India Ltd., Rexroth Maneklal Industries Ltd., National Machinery Manufacturers Ltd., Hindustan Tractors Ltd., at various positions, covering activities like Production, Production Planning, Materials Management, Industrial Engineering etc.

Mr. Shah started off by acknowledging everyone and importance of Engineers in the world today. He showed a very interesting presentation, which showed the progress of India and Gujarat in the field of Chemical Engineering. He brought up interesting facts and figures which were surprising and gave a new perspective to the students of looking at the Chemical Engineering Industry. He stated that Gujarat has great diversity in the field of Chemical Engineering mostly as clusters in different regions. He then asked the students to explore the latest technology and exert on innovations. He further said that we need passionate engineers today, who can steer the growth level with their lateral thinking and inventive measures.

Speaker 2: Samir Patel (Managing Director at Amos Enterprise Ltd)

Mr. Samir Patel is Mr. Samir Patel is the Chairman & Managing Director at Amos Enterprise Ltd., he specializes in marketing and advertising. He has finished his education from Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidylaya, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat. He has a vast experience in chemical trading industry.

He started his speech by talking about entrepreneurship, its emergence and importance in our country today. He said that an entrepreneur takes a plunge and raises opportunities in the Chemical Engineering sector. He stated that a person needs to have immense passion that can take him to places. He insisted the students must inculcate passion, have strong will, focus and also be a good team player. If these qualities are inculcated in an individual, he/she is sure to become highly employable.

Speaker 3: Prof. C.G. Bhagchandani (Prof. Chemical Engineering, LD Engineering College)

Mr. C. G. Bhagchandani has over 28 years of teaching experience. He has a credit of over 30 papers published in various books and journals. He is an active member of IIChE, ISTE and also conducts environmental audits.

Prof. Bhagchandani flagged off his speech by talking about the growth of Chemical industry over the years. He said that Global economy is challenging an uncertain, its growth is cyclic in nature and there are several slumps and accelerations. He showed graphical representations of several sectors in Chemical Engineering Industry. He stated that India has developed with leaps and bounds over theses years and high-tech plants and industries are common phenomenon here. A new problem that has risen is of waste management, he said that, the field of waste management has great scope for Chemical Engineers.

He concluded his speech by asserting that the Chemical Engineering Industry is extremely versatile and will have several professions opening up in the coming future. He asked students to be goal driven and focused in order to taste success.
