Entrepreneurship is described as a potential driver to support the economic growth, since it is important for productivity, innovation and employment. The role of entrepreneurship has become increasingly apparent in economic and social development. Economically, entrepreneurship stimulates markets. Accordingly, it is the goal of many countries to develop a culture of entrepreneurial thinking nowadays and therefore a number of b-schools are plunging to provide Entrepreneurship courses. Entrepreneurship can be instilled by providing appropriate enabling environment via integrating entrepreneurship into education systems, learning process, and technical assistance. Economically, entrepreneurship stimulates markets. The formation of new business leads to job creation and has a multiplying effect on the economy. Socially, entrepreneurship empowers citizens, generates innovation and changes mindsets. These changes have the potential to integrate developing countries into the global economy.

Entrepreneurship is thus the dire need of the hour today, with the growing number of start-ups across the world, Indian entrepreneurs need to be at par with their international counterparts. There lies a dearth of skills and soft skills that are an inevitable aspect of a successful entrepreneur. Oakbrook Business School has taken an initiative to encourage and support the budding entrepreneurs of Gujarat by organising Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps (EAC). These camps are a platform where aspiring students get insights from the experts from industry.

The 3rd EAC by Oakbrook Business School (OBS) was conducted from 21st February 2015 to 23rd February 2015, at St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad. This EAC was exclusively for science and technology students of the college. The speakers on the first day of EAC at Xaviers College were:

  • Mr. Padmin Buch (SME Development Expert
  • Mr. Rohit Patel (Communication & Creativity Expert)
  • Mr. Chandramauli Pathak : Charms of being an Entrepreneur

The camp started with an introduction session by Ms. Shraddha Sheth (Academic Head, OBS). He gave a brief introduction of Oakbrook Business School and the pedagogy it follows. The session was then commenced by Mr. Pathak by a presentation on characteristics and potentials of a successful entrepreneur. He asked the students to dream and have courage to follow their dreams, “an entrepreneur is a dreamer and a risk taker”. He further stated that the economy today is an “Entrepreneurial economy” and the people today yearn for quality and luxury. They do not hesitate to pay more if served with quality products. This leads to an era where smart entrepreneurs can vouch their target clients by providing quality and innovative products which makes the customer’s life easy as well as lavish.


The next session was taken by Mr. Padmin Buch. He held an interactive session where he gave a presentation on entrepreneurs. He said that an entrepreneur is bold and faces the challenges with confidence and composure. He then listed the fundamental requirements of being an entrepreneur and laid down factors one should assess the before executing a business plan. An entrepreneur does thorough analysis of the market, feasibility of the idea, surveying the target audience and ways to cater to them. An entrepreneur then creates a well manicured business plan with innovative marketing strategies. Mr. Buch asked the students to do a thorough market survey before plunging into an entrepreneurial venture, along with the idea it is extremely important to test the feasibility of the idea. He concluded by saying that entrepreneurs should be risk takers but also smart risk takers.

Mr. Rohit Patel: Creativity

The last session of the first day of the camp was taken by Mr. Rohit Patel on the topic “Creativity”. He showcased an inspiring video of people with extraordinary achievements. He noted that what made them successful was their “dare to be different” attitude and rigorous hardwork. He stated that there can be no substitute for stringent hardwork “Success is 1% aspiration and 99% perspiration”. He advised the students to think differently and gave examples of successful entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs, Thomas Edison, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg etc. The common factor in all these personalities is that they dared to think differently and worked relentlessly after their dreams.

Day 2
The speakers for the 2nd day were:

  • Mr. Vijay Desai (Director Gujarat Innovation Centre)
  • Mr. Vikram Patel

Prof. Ajay Dixit : Motivation & Competency Development

Prof. Dixit started his session by showing a motivational film and asked them the moral they got from it. He stated that anything in the world is possible if a person has determination and dedication to accomplish that task. He discussed about the traits one needs to be a successful entrepreneur by listing great inventors and story about their inventions that have changed the world we live in like Alexander Grahambell, Elvis Presley, Amitabh Bacchan, Chestor Carlsson etc. He motivated the students to believe in themselves and their dreams and also work hard to turn them into reality. In the end of the session he gave few book names for the students to read in order to get motivated.


Mr. Sharvil Pathak has a rich experience of the pharma industry and he gave insights about it. He talked about his experience of working in Intas and the challenges he faces time and again. He stated that the foremost trait a person should inculcate in order to be successful is “confidence”. This trait yields respect and keeps the person going and ready for challenges. The trait that comes close second is having “good communication skills”, i.e. one should know how to deal with the clients, irrespective of their background. Mr. Sharvil then invited the students to ask questions about the pharma industry and its future. The students interacted jovially and got thoroughly enlightened at the end of the session.

Mr. Vijay Desai: Innovation & Innovative Projects

The next session was taken by Mr. Vijay Desai. He started his session by talking about the power of self. He said that if one is passionate about something and works hard for it, the efforts never go in vain. He added that a bold and hard-working entrepreneur can find several ways in order to achieve his/her goal. He stressed on the “Innovation” factor of an idea and advised the students to open-up their minds and bring forth innovative yet realistic ideas.

Mr. Vikram Patel: Setting up new venture: Procedures & Incentives for MSMEs

Mr. Vikram Patel held a very interactive session where he urged the students to ask questions. He discussed about his experiences and difficult times during his journey as an entrepreneur. He then explained stepwise procedure of before starting up a business in India, he said “Once you have decided to start a business, an important consideration to look into is the various government guidelines for setting up a factory, seeking permits from various departments (including electricity, water, environment, etc) and filing registrations along with necessary fee, necessary taxation, etc. These minute formalities need to be fulfilled in order to start a business”. He ended his session by saying that it is not a cake-walk to be a successful entrepreneur; one requires strong determination, dedication and ample patience to flourish.

Day 3

The students were taken on an industrial visit to Vishal Containers, Chattral, Ahmedabad. The students were divided in the batches of two and taken to the site by Mr. Kandarp Pandya (Event Coordinator, OBS). The students were given a tour of the factory by the Marketing Manager, Mr. Sanjay. The students were shown how the boxes of the food products and other commodities were made. They were surprised to see that box containers of brands like Pizza Hut, Dominos, KFC and many others were made locally. They asked number of questions regarding the entire process of manufacturing Boxes, how they are approaching clientele etc. Mr. Sanjay happily answered their inquisitive questions. He also gave insights about the importance of brand identity, marketing and advertising of a particular product.
In the second session, the students were asked to prepare presentations on the process used by Vishal Containers in its various divisions like Marketing, Finance, HR, Research and Production. The participants made brilliant presentations in the limited time and discussed about the various aspects and brought forward their bright and innovative ideas and suggestions. The Camp was a great success and there was a lot to take away for the students.
