Summary

An Internship is a very important part of a student’s career, it is the stepping stone of their career and a lifetime opportunity where one can get introduced to a particular work culture. One can learn ample things in his/her summer internship and thereby gauge the career prospects in the coming years. Keeping this scenario in mind, Oakbrook Business School organized a scintillating seminar at its campus on the topic ‘Optimizing your summer internship’ on 15th April 2014. Oakbrook Business School is an upcoming B-School at Adalaj, and has conducted several programs in the genre of Faculty Development, Student Development and Corporate Training. Oakbrook Business School is an AICTE approved institute and is all ready to launch its MBA program this year.

The workshop at OBS had a huge presence more than 130 students, professionals and faculty of various institutes who had gathered to get insights about making the most from their internships. The workshop had a string of glorious speakers from the industry namely Prof. P. Ganesh (Faculty, EDI, Gandhinagar); Mr. Jitendra Shah (M.D, Tipsons Financial Services Pvt. Ltd.); Mr. Raghunandan Honawar ( Sub Head- supply chain Management, Videocon Telecommunications Ltd.); Mr. Mohammad Athar (Sr. Manager, PwC); Mr. Sushil Thaker (Sr. Consultant, KPMG), and Mr. Guruprakash Iyer (CEO, G&F International. The workshop also had the presence of eminent personalities such as Dr. N. R. Dixit (Founder, Director, Som-Lalit Institute of Management) Prof. N. R. Dave (Former Vice Chancellor-North Gujarat University, Former Director of Technical Education, Govt. of Gujarat, Former Chairman, AICTE, Western Region) who are also among the Board of Governors of Oakbrook Business School. The workshop was a highly interactive session where the eminent speakers enlightened the participants about the significance of their internship, the students were both enthused and motivated at the end of the event.

Speaker 1: Prof. P Ganesh (Faculty, Entrepreneurship Development of India, Gandhinagar)

Prof. P. Ganesh possesses around 30 years of experience with top of the line organizations like Tata Steel, Maruti Udyog Ltd., Apollo Tyres Ltd., Coats Viyella India Ltd., Arvind Mills Ltd., and Ashima Ltd. He has also been actively engaged in academia as visiting faculty in Management Institutes in Ahmedabad. His areas of interest include Production & Operations, Supply Chain Management, Data Warehousing & Business Intelligence, IT and MIS and ERP implementations.

Prof. P. Ganesh started his speech by defining internship and its motives. He gave a detailed presentation about the types of internships and its outcomes. He advised the students that they should not worry about the remuneration during their internship because the experience that they will get will be invaluable. He further added that students should choose the internship in the company of their choice and learn as much as possible from their first corporate experience. Prof. Ganesh ended his speech by wishing the students all the best and perform their best during their internship and thereby leave their mark in the organization.

Speaker 2: Mr. Jitendra Shah (M.D, Tip Sons Financial Services Pvt. Ltd.)

Mr. Jitendra Shah is the managing Director of Tip Sons Financial Services Pvt. Ltd. He has more than 20 years of experience of working in the financial services sector. He started Tip Sons Financial Services with a humble team headquarter in Ahmedabad, which has now spread over a network across 7 states of India. His gamut of expertise includes Fixed Income – voice broking & trading into Debt Market Instruments like Govt. Securities, Bonds, Commercial Papers & Certificate of Deposits, Investment Banking and Services in Commodities & Currency Derivatives, Consultancy and Wealth Management.

He started his speech by saying that one must possess a vision and have passion to follow it. He stated that an internship gives a student’s an eye in the corporate world which will help them to pave their way towards success. It doesn’t matter whether yo are very articulate or have be an academic genius, all need to have is through discipline and readiness to work hard for achieving your goal He ended his speech by saying that hardwork and strong will definitely give you a taste of success and performing well in your internship will be a stepping stone towards success.

Speaker 3: Mr. Raghunandan Honawar (Hub Head- Supply Chain Management, Videocon Telecommunications Ltd., Ahmedabad)

Mr. Raghunanadan Honawar is the Hub Head- Supply Chain Management (Gujarat, Mumbai and Maharashtra) for Videocon Telecommunications Ltd. He followed up his Mechanical Engineering from the REC Kurukshetra (now known as NIT) with a Masters in Financial Management from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. His career of over 25 years has spanned Maintenance, Projects, Materials & SCM in the Manufacturing, EPC & Telecom industries. Presently he heads Supply Chain Management for Gujarat & Maharashtra at Videocon Telecommunications Limited.

Mr. Honawar has worked at prolific Telecommunication giants such as Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular as well as KEC International Ltd., Mumbai and Cable Corporation of India, Mumbai for a long period of time. Apart from working his passion also includes Music, Trekking, Travelling, Creative writing, Public speaking and Leadership training to name a few.

Mr. Raghunandan Honawar started his speech on a funny note, he asked the participants if they were going to vote. He then moved on to internship and its importance. He added that an internship will give them a glorious experience of working in a corporate culture; it will show them a life outside their college campus and thus bring them closer to reality. He talked about several points about the significance of summer internship and interacted with the participants.

Speaker 4: Mohammad Athar (Sr. Manager, PricewaterhouseCoopers, India)

Mohammad is Manager in the CP&I practice of PwC India with prominent years of experience predominantly in infrastructure consulting space with a focus towards transport, and large area developments. He has done his MBA from VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur and B.Tech in Electric Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University. He also holds a certification in PPP and Urban Planning from IIM Ahmedabad and CEPT respectively.

His work is primarily in the area of Finance Modeling, Market Assessment, Transaction Advisory, Entry Strategy, Economic Analysis and Development Studies. He has worked at Siemens India in the mobility group where he served key clients in railways, metro and Airport sector. He has travelled to several countries during various business engagements and hence has vibrant knowledge in managing a range of international projects.

Mr. Mohammad Athar started his speech by talking about his own journey. He reminisced how after graduation he was confused about choosing a career path for himself. He stated that his internship steered him to choose the right path for him. He advised the participants that an internship will not only give you a corporate experience will also give you an opportunity to know great people from the organization and build relationships which may help them in their career ahead. He ended his speech by saying that one must take internship as an opportunity and grab it to excel in future prospects.

Speaker 5: Mr. Sushil Thaker (Manager, KPMG, India)

Mr. Sushil Thaker is a manager at KPMG Accounting Advisory Services and has a profound experience in the respective field. He is a Company Secretary and a member of Institute of the Chartered Accountants of India.

He is one of the founding members of Accounting Advisory services (AAS) in KPMG, and is a driving force of growing the AAS team from 7 members to 200 members nationally. He has worked on projects with KPMG offices across India and overseas. He works with clients on IGAAP Technical advisory challenges and policy analysis for large groups in Gujarat, he has been the engagement manager on the IFRS convergence for a USD 1 billion fertiliser major USD 1 billion generics pharma company, a USD 1 billion MNC ITES company, and a USD 500 million biotech major all of which are based in India. Currently he leads the efforts for Accounting Advisory services in Gujarat. Mr. Thaker has also conducted several workshops for PG and UG students, including sessions at PDPU and Ahmedabad.

Mr. Sushil Thaker gave a very engrossing speech along with a detailed presentation which consists of several pictures and an inspiring video. He stated that “There are no free lunches in the world but an internship is kind of free lunch for a student”, wherein he/she can gain knowledge, experience and learn about the work culture. He further said that a person must always take risk, and never follow the herd and follow a rather less travelled road. He gave several examples and anecdotes which enlightened the participants about their career prospects and the role of internship in their respective careers. He ended his speech with a motivating poem which influenced the participants.

Speaker 6: Mr. Guruprakash Iyer (CEO, G & F International)

Mr. Guruprakash Iyer is an MBA from Symbiosis, Pune. He has a rich experience of over 18 years in the corporate world at giants such as Arvind, Airtel and Tata to name a few. He was the youngest G.M. at TATA and also the youngest National Vertical Head at the mere age of 35 years. He retired at the age of 36 years and is a strong proponent of Entrepreneurship & Leadership to achieve Globalization.

He started his speech on a funny note and added he wished to speak about basic skills to be garnered by a student during his/her internship, these skills are soft skills, work ethics and corporate mannerisms. He added that the students should be driven and passionate during their internship and only then can they taste the fruit of success. He advised the students to be innovative as well as passionate towards whatever they do.
